Jack Lee Hammer

Feb. 17, 1949 – June 2, 2009

Jack Lee Hammer, a longtime resident of Central Oregon and one of the nation’s most committed New York Yankees fans, passed away June second, at 11:45 a.m., following a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.

Jack was born on February 17th 1949, in the Dalles to Herbert (Hickey) and Francis Hammer, who raised him with his brother and sister, Dal and Glenda Hammer on a ranch near Maupin Oregon.

Upon graduating from Maupin High School, Jack attended the Oregon college of Education and received a degree in Corrections Social Science, after which he spent two years in service to V.I.S.T.A. Jack worked for C.O.C.A.A.N. and as a private contractor for H.U.D. for many years, with his compassion and commitment to help those less fortunate than himself being the driving force of his entire career. He was noted for his unwavering devotion to The Bend Elks baseball team as a member of Pierre’s Posse as well as for his quick-witted and upbeat sense of humor. He was a committed and admirable single father who will be forever loved.

Jack is survived by his daughters, Jessica Hammer and Liberty Hall; his brother and sister, Dal and Glenda Hammer; his grandsons, Reyn Carpenter, Jack Guindon; and nephews, Luke, Zane, Chris, Glenn; and his niece, Amber. Jack had a large extended family and many friends in Oregon and beyond.

His daughters wish to express their deepest gratitude to his brother, Dal Hammer and friend, Terry Lynch for their selfless devotion to Jack throughout the years and especially in the last months of his life.

Family and friends would like to extend special heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and care providers who helped support Jack.

Any donations in remembrance of Jack should be given to Hospice and Partners in Care, to support their extraordinary efforts. (Partners in Care – 2075 NE Wyatt Ct, Bend – (541) 382-5882)

If you would like to remember him with an act, perhaps volunteer a home repair to a needy person or family.
