Catch Eric Taylor at a house and old church

It was almost exactly a year ago when the revered folk singer-songwriter Eric Taylor played the now-defunct Three Pines House Concerts series in Bend.

Now, the Texas troubadour is back and he’ll play two shows in two nights. This time, he’ll play another house concert, and, as if that isn’t intimate enough, a church in the old ghost town of Richmond.

Taylor is a product of Houston’s famed songwriting scene of the 1970s, which gave birth to bigger names such as Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle. But as far as talent, few are bigger than Taylor, who uses his throaty voice and deft guitar playing to paint sweeping, bluesy pictures of life, loss, love, and everything else that makes living worth the trouble. Folks like Lyle Lovett and Joan Baez — both of whom will play in Bend later this summer — like Taylor’s material enough to record it themselves.

Tonight, Taylor will perform at the Biggers house on Fadjur Lane east of Sisters. The show will start at 8 p.m., doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the suggested donation is $15. For more info, directions to the venue, and to R.S.V.P., call 541-548-3063 or e-mail flybiggers@outlaw.net.

On Saturday, Taylor will head to the remote town of Richmond, located about 20 miles northeast of Mitchell, which is about 47 miles northeast of Prineville.

Out there, Jody Foss hosts concerts at the Old Richmond Church. The concert will begin at 8 p.m., and the suggested donation is $20. Camping is available nearby and treats and beverages are included in the ticket price.

There will also be a barbecue dinner at the church for $7 at about 6:30 p.m.

The Taylor show is the first of three this summer at the Old Richmond Church. Also scheduled are performances by Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh on July 19 and Lloyd Maines and Terri Hendrix on Sept. 6.
