Bend-based IdaTech LLC, which designs and manufactures fuel cell systems, said Thursday that its systems providing backup power for cell phone towers in India passed a key performance test with a distribution company there.
That means the company will develop and produce 310 of its hydrogen-fueled systems for delivery this year, according to a company news release.
IdaTech will provide the ElectraGen H2 units, which are used for backup power for cellular base stations like the cell phone towers atop Awbrey Butte, to Acme Telepower Group, which will distribute the units in India by the end of the year, IdaTech said.
“We delivered what we said we would, and now they’ve placed an order,” said Kathy Fosberg, marketing communications man- ager for IdaTech.
Fosberg declined to comment on financial terms of the agreement.
IdaTech had agreed to the deal with Acme and Ballard Power Systems Inc., which produces fuel cell components used in the ElectraGen H2 system, last October, according to the news release.
“The acceptance of IdaTech’s ElectraGen H2 by Acme for telecommunication deployment in India is an exciting milestone for IdaTech,” said IdaTech CEO Hal Koyama in the news release. “Acme’s acceptance process included the most rigorous testing any IdaTech product has faced to date. Passing this and securing the purchase order for the first 310 ElectraGen H2 validates the robustness of the product and Acme’s commitment to the program.”
IdaTech manufactures its fuel cell products in Bend and at a facility in Tijuana, Mexico. The company has 90 local employees, composed mostly of engineering and administrative staff, Fosberg said. It also has a sales and support office in Germany. The company’s ElectraGen generators are available in the U.S.
