PORTLAND — A man awaiting trial on a murder charge in Multnomah County’s Inverness Jail has been indicted on suspicion of 10 counts of identity theft for a jail phone scam.
Police say Charles Sampson built a burgeoning business in jail by obtaining special telephone lines with a stolen Social Security number and arranging to have calls to those lines forwarded to fellow inmates’ family and friends. Police say Sampson charged inmates $50 to $60 for access to his telephone lines, which bypassed the $2.35 fee charged on collect calls.
Sampson has pleaded not guilty.
The Oregonian reports the same phone fraud happened at the jail three years ago.
The county is seeking bids for better jail phone technology.
