Santiam Wagon Road to get a speed limit

The speed limit on the Santiam Wagon Road between the Cache Creek Toll Station and the Willamette National Forest boundary will be set at 15 mph on Monday, according to a news release from the Ochoco and Deschutes national forests.
The road has had no posted speed limit, according to Forest Service spokeswoman Sue Olson.
Built in 1865, the Santiam Wagon Road was the first road linking the Willamette Valley with Central Oregon. Heavy vehicle traffic in the last 10 to 15 years has damaged the road, the release stated, causing wash-boarding. The reduced speed limit is expected to minimize damage to the road while addressing safety concerns.
