Summit cruises to IMC win over Mountain View

Coming off their first Intermountain Conference loss of the season, the Summit Storm fueled by outside hitter Kelsey Zimmerman came out with a vengeance Tuesday night and swept crosstown rival Mountain View on the Cougars home court, 25-23, 25-14, 25-18.

Kelsey Zimmerman was unstoppable, said Summit coach Jill Waskom about her standout senior, who slammed a match-high 21 kills.

And a big part of that, continued Waskom, was Dani Thompson, our setter, who just put the balls in all the right places.

The win was Summits second over Mountain View in two weeks. In the IMC opener for both teams Sept. 15 at Summit, the Storm took out the Cougars in four games.

After an evenly matched first game Tuesday at Mountain View, the Storm who lost a close four-game match to league-leading Crook County last Thursday in Prineville for their only IMC defeat took control in the second game and cruised to victory and a 4-1 IMC record.

(Summit) came out with two great serves in the second game, said Mountain View coach Mallory Larranaga. Our offense kind of took a hit there.

Thompson led Summits surgical serving with a perfect 14-for-14 mark. And teammate Becky DeFoe went 21 for 22 with three aces.

Leading the Storm defense was Therese Bennett with nine digs.

Our goal was to stop Zimmerman and Gabby (Crowell) out there on the outside, said Larranaga, who sent two blockers to defend almost all of Zimmermans kill opportunities.

Crowell ended up with 10 kills of her own.

Pacing the Cougar offense was Katie Thompson, who dished out 12 assists and had eight digs in the loss that dropped Mountain View to 2-3 in the IMC.

Mountain View teammates Shelby Broberg and Sarah Roshak both had team-high totals of seven kills and three blocks. And libero Bethany Durre led the Cougars in digs with nine.

Mountain View hosts Madras on Thursday night. Summit plays in a 24-team tournament at South Albany on Saturday before continuing conference play next Wednesday night at home against The Dalles-Wahtonka.
