‘Couples Retreat’

Rating: PG-13 for sexual content and language.

What it’s about: Troubled couples go for a “healing” resort vacation.

The kid attractor factor: Vince, Faizon, Jason, Kristen Bell, frat-boy humor.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Even happy couples need to be reminded of why they’re together.

Violence: A punch is thrown.

Language: Some profanity.

Sex: Bumping and grinding and a not-quite “happy ending.”

Drugs: Alcohol is served.

Parents’ advisory: This was edited down from an R rating, so the raw stuff you see in the TV commercials is missing. Still not much here for kids younger than 15.

‘The Invention of Lying’

Rating: PG-13 for language including some sexual material and a drug reference.

What it’s about: A world that knows only “truth” meets its first fibber in this comic satire.

The kid attractor factor: Jennifer Garner, Ricky Gervais, edgy British wit.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Little white lies, fibs and exaggerations make the world go round.

Violence: None, though someone dies.

Language: A bit of profanity.

Sex: Discussed.

Drugs: Wine is served, one drug joke.

Parents’ advisory: If they’re old enough to know what “satire” is, your teens may get something out of this.

‘Fame’

Rating: PG for thematic material including teen drinking, a sexual situation and language.

What it’s about: Teens compete to get into, and compete to succeed at, New York’s famed High School for the Performing Arts.

The kid attractor factor: Attractive teens sing and dance their way to glory.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Fame takes hard work more than luck, and sometimes, you just don’t have enough talent to live your dream.

Violence: None.

Language: A little mild profanity.

Sex: Teenagers making out, and one is lured into a compromising situation by a creep.

Drugs: Some teen drinking.

Parents’ advisory: This is NOT the “Fame” you remember — with edgy treatment of sex and sexuality and the pitfalls of a showbiz life. More a watered-down “High School Musical” version, appropriate for 12 and older.

‘Whip It’

Rating: PG-13 for sexual content including crude dialogue, language and drug material.

What it’s about: A Texas teen who doesn’t fit in joins a roller derby team.

The kid attractor factor: Cute Ellen Page, cute boys, high school rebellion and roller derby.

Good lessons/bad lessons: If at first you don’t fit in, look around, “find your tribe.”

Violence: It’s roller derby.

Language: PG-13 profanity.

Sex: Dating, sexual situations.

Drugs: “Drug material,” including booze and cigarettes.

Parents’ advisory: A teen movie in the “Juno” mold — smart, sassy, uplifting and, despite its cutting edge, wholesome.

The Family Movie Guide should be used along with the Motion Picture Association of America rating system for selecting movies suitable for children. Only films rated G, PG or PG-13 are included in this weekly listing, along with occasional R-rated films that may have entertainment value or educational value for older children with parental guidance. Compiled by St. Petersburg Times film critic Steve Persall.
