Crook County posts shutout at Summit

Rebounding from last week’s 58-0 drubbing at the hands of Hermiston, Crook County defeated Summit 13-0 on Friday night to improve to 2-1 in Intermountain Conference football games this season.
Led by junior Jordan Reeher’s 75 yards rushing and two touchdowns, the Cowboys (2-5 overall) totaled 205 yards on the ground on Summit’s artificial turf to post their second win in three games. Zach Lea, Crook County’s starting quarterback the previous six contests, rushed for 87 yards and caught three passes for 32 yards in his first start at running back. New signal caller Travis Bartels completed six of 11 passes for 63 yards and one interception.
“He gives us one more weapon back there,” Cowboys coach Woody Bennett said about the 6-foot-1, 191-pound Lea. “The two biggest guys on our team are Lea and (fullback) Corbyn Harris. Put them together and you’ve got a pretty good punch (in the backfield).”
Controlling the ball and the clock for most of the game, Crook County held Summit to just 170 yards of total offense. No Storm running back gained more than 40 yards. Backup quarterback Brian Gallagher, who came into the game in the second half, led Summit’s offense, completing six of 16 passes for 88 yards against one interception. The loss marks the Storm’s 10th consecutive defeat, a streak that dates back to the 2008 season. Summit’s last win was on Oct. 9, 2008, a 14-0 victory against the Cowboys.
“The key was that guys played not only sick but hurt too,” Bennett said. “Guys have missed practice, kids went home sick today and couldn’t play. We had no replacements on the offensive line. But we gutted it out.”
The Cowboys dominated time of possession early in the game, eating 12 minutes and 27 seconds off the clock on their first two drives. Crook County scored on its first possession of the game, putting together an 11-play, 66-yard scoring drive that took just over 5 minutes and 30 seconds off the clock. Reeher capped the drive with a one-yard score that gave the Cowboys a 7-0 lead after Seth Henry’s extra-point kick.
The two teams held one another scoreless until Reeher struck again in the fourth quarter with a four-yard touchdown run to seal the victory.
IMC play continues next week for both teams. Crook County hosts Bend High (2-1 IMC) while Summit has Pendleton (0-4 IMC) at home.
