- Steelhead Falls is a stunning feature in the Deschutes River canyon near Crooked River Ranch.
Steelhead Falls, along the Deschutes River near Crooked River Ranch, is a popular swimming spot in the summer, but the easy hike can be nice in the fall as well. Keep your eye out for golden eagles as you walk the half mile from the trailhead down into the river canyon for a view of the waterfall.
If you go
Getting there: From U.S. Highway 97 in Terrebonne, turn west onto Lower Bridge Road toward Crooked River Ranch. Turn right onto 43rd Street, and left onto Chinook Drive. Continue, take a left onto Badger Road, then take a right onto Quail Road. At River Road, turn left. After about a quarter of a mile, the road turns to gravel. Follow River Road to the trailhead. The roads have changed in the last year, according to Tom Mottl with the Bureau of Land Management, but the route is now well-signed from Crooked River Ranch to the Steelhead Falls trailhead.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate one-mile loop from trailhead to the falls and back, though hikers can follow the river farther downstream.
Cost: No passes required
