Summit boys basketball tops South Medford

Matt Meagher and Justin Huckins led Summit to victory on their home court over visiting South Medford, 69-60, Friday evening.

“They were huge in leadership and intensity,” Summit coach Dan Munson said about his pair of seniors. “Other guys look up to them.”

Meagher scored a game-high 19 points, and Huckins dropped in 17 of his own in the nonconference win against the historically dominant Class 6A Panthers.

South Medford jumped to an 8-1 lead before Munson called timeout to curb the visitors’ momentum. It proved to be the right move. His team went on a 42-17 run thereafter and never looked back.

“We were up 18 at halftime,” Munson said, “and it almost shocked our guys.”

The Panthers brought it back to within six points late in the game, but that was as close as they came to Summit.

“Our guys hung on,” said Munson, whose team stands at 3-1 and plays North Medford today. “They made plays down the stretch.”

Jesse Heinly was Summit’s third-leading scorer with 14 points, including four three-pointers. The Storm’s Cody Absalon contributed nine points.
