EUGENE — Omar Samhan scored 22 points, Matt Dellavedova added 21 and Saint Mary’s held off a late Oregon rally to beat the Ducks 81-76 Saturday.
Samhan scored 14 points in the second half as the Gaels (7-1) rallied from an eight-point deficit, and Dellavedova had nine points in the final three minutes after Oregon had cut Saint Mary’s nine-point lead to one.
Dellavedova’s three-pointer with 2:51 to play ended an 8-0 Oregon run and gave the Gaels a 71-67 lead. Saint Mary’s secured the win by going 10 for 10 from the free-throw line in the final 1:25.
“I thought that was the shot of the game,” Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett said of Dellavedova’s three-pointer, which was the Gaels’ last field goal of the game. “Probably want to get a better shot than that, but the shot clock was down and he’s a great shooter and he makes big shots.”
Clint Steindl also scored 14 for the Gaels.
Malcolm Armstead had 14 points for the Ducks (4-4), who led 34-33 at halftime. E.J. Singler added 12 points and Michael Dunigan had 10 for Oregon.
An ankle injury kept the Ducks’ second-leading scorer, Tajuan Porter, on the bench for the second time in three games.
“I’ve been told the best thing to do is let it heal or else he’ll be right back to where he is now,” Oregon coach Ernie Kent said.
With their three-point specialist out, the Ducks attempted only five shots from beyond the arc, making two. Both were season lows.
Still, the Ducks led 43-35 following a 9-2 run to open the second half.
But a three-pointer by Mitchell Young sparked the Gaels and Saint Mary’s took its first lead of the second half on a three-point play by Samhan with 13:38 to play that made it 50-49.
A three-pointer from Steindl gave the Gaels a 68-59 advantage with 5:41 remaining. Oregon answered by scoring the next eight points before Dellavedova’s clutch three-pointer gave them some breathing room.
While Oregon shot better from the field — 50 percent to 47 percent — the Ducks made just 12 of 21 free throws while the Gaels were 20 of 24 from the line.
