Nike founder and Chairman Phil Knight bought nearly 400 acres of farmland about four miles north of Terrebonne on Dec. 17, according to a deed filed in Deschutes County. The native Oregonian paid $5 million for the land, which runs along the Crooked River to the northwest of Smith Rock State Park. Knight, through a Nike spokeswoman, declined to comment Wednesday on the purchase.
Knight bought the land from Ambers Thornburgh and Agnes DeLashmutt, the deed shows. Kameron DeLashmutt, manager and CEO of the proposed 1,970-acre Thornburgh Resort southwest of Cline Buttes, said Tuesday that the sale had nothing to do with him. Thornburgh Resort Group has defaulted on roughly $11.3 million in loans for most of the proposed resort’s land. A foreclosure auction for the resort land that was scheduled Monday was postponed until March 21.
Knight already owns at least three other properties in Central Oregon, according to county records. One is a Sunriver home Knight built in 1982 near the Woodlands golf course, while the other two are parcels next to the 400 acres he just purchased. Knight bought 13.2 acres of land in Terrebonne in February 2008 and acquired another 51.77 acres of land in 2004.
