Yes on Measures 66, 67

The League of Women Voters of Deschutes County urges a yes vote on Measures 66 and 67. These referenda were placed on the ballot by folks who wanted the public to vote on two tax increases already passed by the Legislature. Due to increased unemployment, funds available for vital services were inadequate. To continue to provide the same level of services, the state needed $4 billion more than it had. To make up for the loss of income, the Legislature cut $2 billion and used stimulus and reserve funds to make up $1 billion more. Finally, the Legislature added two new taxes. These will raise $733 million.
It is extremely important that these measures pass. If not, the Legislature will be forced to cut even more than they already have. Because over 90 percent of general fund revenue pays for education, health care and public safety, any more cuts will be extremely painful at the same time that we face increased demands for state services, such as food stamps.
Measure 66 increases the marginal rate on income taxes of the wealthiest Oregonians: individuals with over $125,000 in income, and families over $250,000. For example, a couple making $260,000 in taxable income will pay an additional $180 in income taxes. As stated on the ballot, Measure 67 raises the $10 corporate minimum tax, the business minimum tax and corporate profits tax. Remember that more than 98 percent of Oregon taxpayers will not have any increase in taxes when these measures are passed.
