Bend police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fire that caused about $500,000 in damage to an Oregon Department of Transportation office building in Bend on Monday morning.
Preston Jacob Berman, 20, was taken into custody Monday evening on suspicion of arson, burglary and criminal mischief and later transported to St. Charles Bend for a mental health evaluation, said Lt. Ben Gregory of the Bend Police Department. Gregory said police talked to Berman at Bethlehem Inn, where he was staying.
Following an investigation by several agencies, officials have determined that the fire was the result of arson.
Gregory said police are waiting for the outcome of Berman’s mental health evaluation and then will turn the case over to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office.
