ASHLAND — The Ashland City Council could face a cleanup tab of nearly $1 million if it decides to shut down a gun club on city-owned land.

The council is considering whether to grant a long-term lease to the Ashland Gun Club on 32 acres near the municipal airport.

The city’s staff says it’s unlikely the city would have to meet the most stringent standards for cleaning up lead ammunition, but if it did, the cost would be up to $950,000.

The Ashland Daily Tidings says the city’s legal staff has proposed a lease agreement that would make the gun club responsible for regular lead recovery and for the final lead cleanup from soil and wetlands on the site if the lease is ever ended.
