Mt. Bachelor extends grooming

Nordic skiers will be able to venture out onto Mt. Bachelor’s groomed trails through late June, as the ski area has decided to offer passes to the public for an extra month this year.
In the past, national ski teams and the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation have trained on some of the groomed Nordic trails in the late spring and early summer, said Andy Goggins, Mt. Bachelor spokesman.
This year, with a current base of 14 feet of snow, the ski area has decided to extend the season for the public as well, he said.
The trails normally close on May 21 with the Pole Pedal Paddle, but this year, classic and skate skiers can buy a pass for two blocks of days after that.
“We’ll be doing daily grooming of about 15 kilometers,” Goggins said. During the winter season, about 56 kilometers of trails branch out from the Nordic center.
The first block will run from May 22 through May 31, and the second block will run from June 10 through June 20. Each block will cost $50 per person, Goggins said. Other details — such as whether people can buy a day pass or whether the ski area will offer a combined pass for the two blocks — are still being worked out, he said.
Downhill operations for Mt. Bachelor will be open through May 29.
