Not all who stagger are drunk

I am a disabled veteran. Veterans seem largely to be remembered by the public on Veterans Day only. Some veterans, such as myself and many Vietnam vets, remember their service to this country daily.

Recently, in a local food store, I was refused service due to the fact that I was not walking in a correct fashion acceptable to the proprietor of that establishment. My hips have been fractured, spine has been fractured three times, neck fractured once, shoulder rebuilt twice, along with severe fractures of the skull and concussions. Adding insult to injury is a severe sinus infection that will not vacate. In short, I wobble, stagger, fall down often, slur my words.

This letter is a reminder to business owners and the public that if and when you see someone not having a posture you would personally approve of, or a person moving side to side in their walk or holding on to an object to keep themselves upright, that that person is not necessarily under the influence of intoxicants. That certain individual may be, just may be, a United States veteran of the armed services who had his or her “butt on the line” somewhere and was injured for you.

There are federal laws protecting the disabled against harassment, suable in a court of law.
