PORTLAND — Summit singles players Paxton Deuel and Parker Nichols both advanced to today’s quarterfinal round at the Class 5A boys tennis state championship at the Portland Tennis Center.
Deuel, the bracket’s No. 1 seed, cruised past Sandy’s Ethan Claggett in his first match Thursday, 6-0, 6-0.
Nichols had a tougher road to the quarterfinals, topping Jing Wu of Benson 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1 in his pigtail match before besting Cole Charbonneau of St. Helens 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 6-1 in the first round.
“He was awesome today,” Summit coach Josh Cordell said about Nichols. “Only two other Summit (boys) players have ever advanced to the quarterfinal round in singles play: Paxton and Cody Kohlmoos (who is currently playing for the University of Montana).”
Bend High’s Jeff Windsor also advanced to today’s quarterfinal round — the Lava Bear senior won two matches in straight sets — giving the city of Bend three of the eight 5A singles quarterfinal competitors.
Central Oregon tennis players were not as fortunate in the 5A boys doubles bracket Thursday. Summit’s Bo and Liam Hall as well as the Storm’s Sterling Dillingham and Scott Parr fell one victory short of the quarterfinals, as did Mountain View’s Matt Larraneta and Matt Van Hemelryck.
The 5A boys state tennis tournament continues today at the Portland Tennis Center.
