Officials: Horse virus threat dissipating

State officials announced today that the equine herpes virus has been well-contained at this point, and that most horse owners in the state should feel free to participate in horse shows, rodeos and other equine events.
Five horses in Oregon tested positive for the virus, and one died after being exposed to the virus at a horse show in Utah last month. Horses affected or potentially affected by the virus have been quarantined, and the outbreak is under control, said officials from the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
Though the virus has been contained, officials recommend that horse owners practice good biosecurity and hygiene at all times. Owners should not share equipment among horses, and should wash their hands after handling each individual horse to prevent the potential spread of the virus.
