Emily’s Army plays in Bend

I turned 35 this week, which was enough to make me feel old before I started writing about Emily’s Army, an East Bay pop-punk band made up of kids whose ages range from 15 to 17.

You see, Emily’s Army’s drummer is Joey Armstrong, the teenage son of Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong. And Joey’s actually younger than his dad’s breakthrough album, “Dookie,” which came out just over 17 years ago and was so perfectly snotty and malcontented that it dominated my car stereo the summer after my senior year in high school.

Sigh.

Anyway, Emily’s Army will no doubt tire of seeing Joey’s family tree leading stories about them. Fortunately, that angle will eventually fade, because these kids have chops. Songwriters Max and Cole Becker have a knack for crunchy riffs and punk-rock melodies that recall … well, their drummer’s dad. And Emily’s Army’s brand new album, “Don’t Be a Dick,” crackles with the same kind of tight, urgent energy that made early Green Day albums such a visceral reflection of their time.

That energy is no surprise given the classic punk influences listed on the Emily’s Army MySpace: The Clash, Rancid, The Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, Elvis Costello, The Replacements and so on. But it’s also surely a result of the album’s producer, a wise, grizzled industry veteran named Billy Joe Armstrong.
