Portland Baroque Orchestra will present the story of a mythic queen and her lover in “Dido and Aeneas,” coming to the Tower Theatre (835 N.W. Wall St., Bend) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. This concert version of the opera by Baroque composer Henry Purcell is presented by the Oregon Bach Festival as part of a four-concert tour.

As the libretto goes, Dido, founder of the ancient city of Carthage, falls in love with the Trojan hero Aeneas, who sends her into a tailspin when he abandons her. She also encounters spell-casting witches, which is always a treat.

Violinist Monica Huggett directs the concert, and New York-based mezzo-soprano Leah Wool sings the title role. In the second half of the concert, Huggett takes a period-instrument approach to two works by 20th-century composer Benjamin Britten, including the choral dances from “Gloriana,” which celebrates two real-life queens; its subject is Elizabeth I, and it was written for the coronation of Elizabeth II.

“The subjects of Purcell’s timeless opera are love, power, and fate,” a press release quotes John Evans, executive director of the Oregon Bach Festival. “His musical influence spanned the centuries to Benjamin Britten and our time. Monica Huggett will illuminate these ties for our audiences with the vitality and wit that has made her one of our state’s treasured artists.”

Tickets range from $15 to $35.
