NEHALEM — Tillamook County sheriff’s officers say a nearly year-old Oregon City boy was fatally mauled by his family dog while he and his parents were visiting relatives over the Fourth of July weekend in the Oregon coastal town of Nehalem.
James and Michele Naglee had brought their young son, Michael, and their 135-pound American Bulldog named Duncan to visit James Naglee’s parents Betty and Robert Naglee and other relatives. The Oregonian says the parents had temporarily left the child with family members Sunday when Betty Naglee set the squirming child down on the floor.
Sheriff Todd Anderson says the bulldog had been lying about seven feet away and immediately lunged at the baby.
Two sets of grandparents and an uncle tried to pull the dog off but the little boy was declared dead at a local hospital. Three of the adults were treated for dog bites.
The sheriff says the dog was killed at the home after deputies were unable to snare it.
