• Webber gains pole position for German GP: Mark Webber will start from the pole position at the German Grand Prix after narrowly beating McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel in qualifying on Saturday. The Australian posted a time of 1 minute, 30.079 seconds around the 3.2-mile Nuerburgring circuit, with Hamilton 0.065 seconds behind. Vettel, the defending champion and 2011 points leader, finished another 82 thousandths of a second off the pace.

• Japan’s Sato wins pole for Edmonton Indy: Takuma Sato will start from the pole at today’s Edmonton Indy in Alberta, and Will Power earned the other spot in the front row. Sato, the 34-year-old from Tokyo, drove the 13-turn, 2.2-mile road course at the City Centre Airport in 1 minute, 18.5165 seconds Saturday at an average speed of 101.97 miles per hour. That was five-hundredths of a second faster than Team Penske driver Power. Scott Dixon will start on the inside of the second row beside Dario Franchitti, his teammate at Target Chip Ganassi.

• Edwards races to Nationwide victory: Carl Edwards dominated the NASCAR Nationwide Series race Saturday night at Nashville Superspeedway. Edwards’ teammate at Roush Fenway Racing, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., finished second and Mike Dillon was third. Edwards, who leads the Sprint Cup points race over Jimmie Johnson, was leading when the first caution came out on lap 82 for debris. The next lap he entered the pits and was penalized for speeding and NASCAR officials ordered him to the rear of the longest line of cars for the restart. Edwards worked his way back through the field and passed Dillon on lap 120 for the lead.

• Johnson No. 1 Pro Stock qualifier at Mile High: Defying broiling temperatures that kept most competitors’ times down, Allen Johnson hit 197.65 mph in his Dodge Avenger on Saturday to become the top qualifier in the Pro Stock category at the NHRA Mopar Mile High Nationals in Morrison, Colo. Johnson, of Greeneville, Tenn., covered the straight-line, quarter-mile course at Bandimere Speedway in 6.978 seconds to lead the 16-car contingent qualifying for today’s elimination rounds. Hector Arana was the top qualifier in Pro Stock motorcycle, Cruz Pedregon leads Funny Car, and Del Worsham was the top qualifier in Top Fuel.
