The Shins in Bend

Published 5:00 am Tuesday, August 2, 2011

The popular Portland-based pop-rock band The Shins announced Monday morning that it will play a show at the Domino Room in Bend on Aug. 9.

Advance tickets are on sale now for $25 plus fees at www .ticketswest.com only. There is a limit of two per customer, and the show is open to ages 21 and older.

The announcement and show are unusual for several reasons:

• The Domino Room holds around 500 people. The Shins’ most recent concert in Bend, in the summer of 2007, drew more than 2,500 people. The show is part of a three-date “underplay” tour in which the band will play venues in Bend, Eugene and Portland that are significantly smaller than it normally plays on its way to an appearance at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco.

• The show was announced at 11 a.m. Monday, and tickets went on sale immediately to members of the band’s fan club. After an hour, they became available to the general public. All tickets will be available at the “will call” window; there are no paper tickets.

• The Shins have largely disappeared since the band finished touring behind its most recent album, 2007’s “Wincing the Night Away.”

Since then, frontman James Mercer replaced two of his longtime band mates, starred in a movie, and spent much of the past two years focused on Broken Bells, his side project with super-producer Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Beck, Gorillaz).

The band released three albums over the past 10 years on Seattle’s Subpop Records. Songs from the first, 2001’s “Oh, Inverted World,” were featured prominently in the film “Garden State,” in which Natalie Portman famously declared the band would “change your life.”

The “Garden State” placement helped spur surprising commercial success for The Shins’ 2003 album “Chutes Too Narrow,” and by 2007, the band became part of a parade of indie rock bands reaching the top of Billboard’s album chart when “Wincing” debuted at No. 2.
