Search continues for oil workers off Mexico coast

SAN FRANCISCO — The search continued Saturday for oil workers from a Texas-based company who evacuated from an oil structure in Mexico’s Bay of Campeche because of Tropical Storm Nate.

Mexico’s state-controlled oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos, said late Friday it continued to help search for the workers.

The workers had boarded a liftboat Thursday morning, but the ship became disabled and they boarded a life raft. Rescue efforts were initially hampered by the inclement weather, the company, Geokinetics Inc., said on its website.

Ten people are missing — four liftboat crew members, three Geokinetics employees and three independent contractors. The liftboat operator is based in New Iberia, La.

Weather conditions improved on Friday and the search was “ramped up” as the storm moved westward, the company said.

Several boats, five helicopters and one plane were on the search Friday afternoon, it added.

Geokinetics, based in Houston, does seismic services for the oil and gas industry. Shares of the company closed down 7.7 percent at $4.18 Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Nate’s winds could near hurricane strength as it approaches the coast of Mexico on Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said Saturday. The center of the storm is about 155 miles from Veracruz, Mexico, the center said.

Tropical Storm Maria is “losing organization” and could dissipate later Saturday, the NHC said. A tropical storm warning continues to be in effect for several Caribbean islands, including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Katia was expected to become a post-tropical cyclone later Saturday and carry strong winds to British islands Sunday and Monday.

Remnants of slow-moving Tropical Storm Lee continued to dog the U.S. Northeast, with flash-flood watches and warnings for portions of central and eastern Pennsylvania and river-flood warnings from Maryland to upstate New York and southwestern New England, the NHC said.
