The Munich Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Chorale and Phoenix Boys Choir perform the score during a screening of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” The concert and screening of the film runs Oct. 18 at the Rose Garden in Portland.

A film’s music can transport an audience to a new time and place and enhance a scene’s emotions. In “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, composer Howard Shore used instruments and composers from around the world to help transport J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth from page to screen.

Usually in the background, the music takes a starring role when “The Lord of the Rings in Concert” rolls into Portland’s Rose Garden on Oct. 18. The event features a screening of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” while a live orchestra plays Shore’s Grammy award-winning score.

The first film of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “The Fellowship of the Ring” premiered Dec. 19, 2001. The concert is the first installment of a three-part series celebrating the 10th anniversary of its release. “The Two Towers” will tour in 2012 and “The Return of the King” tours in 2013.

Led by conductor Ludwig Wicki, the event features more than 200 musicians including the Munich Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Chorale, Phoenix Boys Choir and soloist Kaitlyn Lusk. The film will be projected on a 60-foot screen behind the musicians.

According to the Rose Garden’s website, “Shore’s score not only captures ‘Fellowship’s’ sweeping emotion, thrilling vistas and grand journeys, but also echoes the very construction of Tolkien’s Middle-earth.”
