Deaths of note from around the world:
Barbara Kent, 103: One of the last surviving stars of silent films, who performed alongside Gloria Swanson, Greta Garbo and Harold Lloyd. Silent film credits include “Prowlers of the Night,” “No Man’s Law,” and “That’s My Daddy.” Died Oct. 13 in Palm Desert, Calif.

Matthew G. Martinez, 82: Former representative from a largely Hispanic district in the Los Angeles area who was a party-line Democrat until he was defeated in a primary and switched to the Republican Party for his last months in office. Died of congestive heart failure on Oct. 15 at his home in Fredericksburg, Va.
Scott Creelman, 68:Athletic star at Melrose High School in Massachusetts and Dartmouth College before he became an executive with the Spalding sporting goods company. Died Sept. 21 at his Deerfield, Mass., home of complications from skin cancer.
Peter P. Mullen, 83: Led the Manhattan law firm of Skadden Arps from a small office in the 1960s to one of the world’s richest and most prominent through advising companies in a long-running wave of corporate takeovers. Died Oct. 15 of a heart attack in New Preston, Conn.
