Deaths of note from around the world:
Matty Alou, 72: Middle brother in one of baseball’s greatest playing families and a slap hitter who won the National League batting title in 1966. Died Thursday in the Dominican Republic of complications from diabetes.
Patricia Page, 51: Former heavyweight boxing champion Greg Page’s widow, who cared for him after he was disabled in a 2001 comeback bout. Died Wednesday at her home in Louisville.
Arne Bue Jensen, 81: Danish trombonist and bandleader known as Papa Bue. Died Wednesday in Copenhagen after being bedridden for several months.
Arnold Bennett, 71: Democratic consultant and grass-roots organizer who played a key role in shaping strategy for President Bill Clinton’s unsuccessful campaign for nationwide health insurance coverage. Died Oct. 26 in Washington after an apparent heart attack.
Marla Gilson, 60: Lobbyist and Democratic activist who advocated for women’s health causes and helped pass a federal law prohibiting discrimination based on genetic testing results. Died Oct. 29 in Chevy Chase, Md., of leukemia.
Donald Galloway, 73: Civil rights advocate for minorities with disabilities who won a lawsuit against the D.C. government for the right of the blind to serve on juries. Died of cancer Oct. 3 in Santa Barbara, Calif.; he lived in D.C.
Franklin Neva, 89: Doctor and scientist who directed the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for 26 years. Died Oct. 16 in Billings, Mont., of a cardiac arrhythmia.
