In a career spanning almost 50 years, broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw has become a leading voice of our nation. The former host of the “Today” show, “NBC Nightly News” and, for a brief time, “Meet the Press,” is heading to Oregon for a couple of lectures and an appearance with the Eugene Symphony.

The award-winning journalist will lend his iconic voice to the Eugene Symphony for a performance of Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait.” The concert runs Nov. 22 at the Hult Center in Eugene.

Written in 1942, Copland’s composition features excerpts from Abraham Lincoln’s speeches and letters. Along with narration by Brokaw, the performance will be illustrated with images assembled by photo-choreographer James Westwater, according to the Eugene Symphony.

The concert will also include Copland’s “Promise of Living from The Tender Land,” William Schuman’s “New England Triptych” and John Adams’ Pulitzer prize-winning “On the Transmigration of Souls.” Prior to the concert, Brokaw will deliver his lecture “The Voice of a Generation” at the Hult Center’s Soreng Theater. Fans can also attend a private reception.

On Dec. 1, Brokaw will return to Oregon for another lecture at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland. He is currently promoting his new book “The Times of Our Lives.”

According to his biography on the MSNBC website, Brokaw began his journalism career in 1962 at KMTV in Omaha, Neb. He has won numerous awards including the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award and the Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement. He is currently a special correspondent for NBC News.

Tickets for the Eugene Symphony range from $30 to $82, depending on seat location. Tickets for the pre-concert lecture are $38. The private reception with Brokaw is $95 and includes admission to the lecture. To purchase tickets, visit www.hultcenter.org or call 541-682-5000.
