Paxton Deuel, a senior at Bend’s Summit High School, has committed to play tennis at the University of Portland.

According to a news release issued Friday by the UP sports information department, Deuel signed a National Letter of Intent with NCAA Division I Portland, a member of the West Coast Conference.

Deuel, who won the Oregon Class 5A high school boys singles title last spring, is currently ranked No. 2 in the Pacific Northwest in the U-18 division. A participant in the 2011 Boys 18s National Championships, he also competed in the Winter Nationals in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

As a freshman at Summit in 2009, Deuel was part of the Storm’s 5A state champion doubles team.

“We are really happy to have Paxton join the program,” Pilots head coach Aaron Gross said in the release. “I think he has a ton of potential to be a great college tennis player.”
