Lee L. Sharman

Aug. 3, 1910 – Nov. 22, 2011

Lee LaBaron Sharman of Bend, Oregon, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on November 22, 2011. He was 101. A celebration of Lees life will be held on Feb. 4, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian

Church, located at 230 NE 9th Street. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Lee was born August 3, 1910, in Seattle, Washington, to Henry and Dolores (Cruz) Sharman. Lee graduated from Santa Monica High School and in 1944, married Ruby Leona Royce, in Santa Barbara, California. They moved to Roseburg, Oregon in 1949.

Lee was a chef at the Roseburg Country Club and at the Sportsman Caf in Sutherlin, Oregon, before returning to college in 1955. The depression interrupted his college career, so he entered the University of Oregon as a junior, graduating in 1957. Lee and Ruby moved to Reeds port, Oregon, where he began his teaching career; eventually becoming head of the math department at Reedsport High School. Lee and Ruby moved to Bend, Oregon, in 1998.

Lee had a wide range of interests. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed playing chess, cribbage, and bridge at the Bend Senior Center. He was an excellent gardener and, for a time, kept bee hives. Lee was an excellent cook and made pies for students who brought him a 4.0 report card; many returned to visit him with report cards, even into their college years.

Lee was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and Past Master of Aurora Masonic Lodge in Reedsport, Oregon.

Lee is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruby Sharman, of Bend, Oregon; his two daughters, Sylvia (husband, Bill) Martin of Nevada, Missouri, and Pat (husband, Steve) Karpstein of Bend, Oregon. Other survivors include Lees five grandchildren and ten great- grandchildren.
