Summit swim teams roll to victory in Salem

SALEM — Summit’s boys and girls swim squads scored team victories at the Central Valley Conference Invite on Saturday, with both teams rolling up 400.5 team points.
The Storm boys placed first in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, and Tommy Brewer won two individual events for Summit. Marshall Allen placed first in the butterfly for the Storm.
Brandon Deckard won two events for Mountain View, which placed sixth in the 10-team field.
The Summit girls got a victory from their 400 freestyle relay. The Mountain View girls, who placed sixth as a team, were led by Elizabeth Cobb’s win in the 200 individual medley.

Lava Bear girls win two
ASHLAND — Junior Brooke Miller led the Bend High girls to a pair of wins at the Ashland double dual. The Lava Bear girls defeated Cascade Christian 130-12 and host Ashland 99-67. On the boys side, Ashland topped Bend 99-67, but the Lava Bears beat out Cascade Christian 111-26. Miller placed first in the 200-meter freestyle and 100 backstroke, and swam legs on Bend’s winning 200 medley relay and the second-place 400 freestyle relay teams. Ciara Hogue also aided the Lava Bears with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and contributed a leg on the 200 medley relay. Doug Steinhauff led the Bend boys squad, winning the 100 backstroke and placing second in the 200 freestyle. Additionally, Steinhauff was a member of the Lava Bears’ 200 freestyle relay team that finished first. Bend will compete next at the Jay Rowan Invitational in Redmond on Saturday, Jan. 7.

PORTLAND — Mountain View rolled past Roosevelt for its fifth win of the season. The Cougars were up 34-16 at the half, and held their momentum in the second half for the victory. Mitch Modin led Mountain View with 18 points. Teammate James Reid logged 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Grant Lannin added two points, four assists and five rebounds for the Cougars. Mountain View (5-2 overall) will host Crook County on Tuesday.

KLAMATH FALLS — Hayden Crook and David Larson scored 19 points apiece to lead the Lava Bears to the nonconference road victory. Crook led Bend early, scoring 13 of his 19 points in the first half, including all three of his three-pointers. The Lava Bears (4-3 overall), led 36-32 at halftime before holding off a late Pelican rally. Bend, which hit 16 of 22 free throws in the game, connected on nine of 12 foul shots in the fourth quarter. Connor Scott added nine points for the Lava Bears. Klamath Union guard Alex Stork led all scorers with 25 points. Bend is at Madras on Tuesday for another nonleague road game, its last contest before the holiday break.

ASHLAND — Summit let a 10-point lead get away in the fourth quarter, then Ashland got hot in overtime and defeated the Storm in the championship game of the Ashland Rotary Tournament. Bradley Laubacher led Summit with 16 points and Austin Peters scored 15, helping the Storm to a 45-35 lead after three periods. But Billy Hansen, who led all scorers with 24 points, fueled a rally by the host Grizzlies that tied the game at 56-56 at the end of regulation play. It was all Ashland in the overtime period, when the Grizzlies outscored the Storm 11-4. Summit (4-3) plays at Eagle Point on Tuesday.

SEASIDE — After leading through the first three quarters, La Pine was outscored 23-11 in the fourth period and lost in the consolation final of the Seaside Holiday Classic. The Hawks were up by eight points late in the third quarter, but the Rangers took over in the fourth, when they made eight of 10 foul shots. The Hawks finished just nine of 20 from the free-throw line. La Pine’s Isaac O’Casey led all scorers with 28 points, and Tyler Parsons added 13 for the Hawks. Austin Pierce had eight rebounds for La Pine (3-5), which plays at Lakeview on Tuesday.

PHOENIX — After opening the season with five consecutive wins, Sisters lost its second game of the season to Cascade Christian during the final day of the Phoenix Invitational. Sisters led 23-19 at the half, but fell behind in the third quarter. Chase Goff and John Erickson led the Outlaws with 15 points apiece, while Erickson also contributed five rebounds and seven assists. Eli Harrison added 11 points for Sisters. The Outlaws (5-2 overall) host the Sisters Holiday Tournament, which begins Tuesday, Dec. 27.

CULVER — Gerson Gonzales led Culver with 17 points, but the Bulldogs fell to Lost River in the championship round of the Culver Holiday Tournament. Culver, down 45-18 at the half, was not able to make the game close down the stretch. Gabe Bolton logged 14 points for the Bulldogs, and teammate Clay Gibson added six points and eight rebounds. Culver (3-3 overall) will host South Wasco on Tuesday.

CULVER — Spotting the Hilanders a 29-9 advantage after the first quarter, the Grizzlies fell in the third-place game of the Culver Holiday Tournament. Tyler Shuey led Gilchrist with 13 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Trinton Koch added seven points. The Grizzlies (2-4) are off until Jan. 6, when they host Butte Falls in both teams’ Mountain Valley League opener.

PRINEVILLE — Corwin Eells recorded 11 points and 14 rebounds for the White Tigers, but it was not enough to top the visiting Eagles in Big Sky League play. Central Christian (0-2 Big Sky, 1-4 overall) is at Dufur on Tuesday.

After managing just two points in the second quarter and trailing 23-20 at halftime, the Lava Bears used some clutch free throw shooting to pull out the nonconference win against the Pelicans. Bend (4-3) connected on only seven of 13 free throw attempts throughout the contest but hit five of six in the final 90 seconds to seal the victory. Ally McConnell scored a game-high 15 points for Bend. Heidi Froelich and Molly Maloney were also in double figures for the Bears with 10 points apiece. Bend’s next game is at home against Madras on Tuesday.

Megan McCadden’s well rounded effort of 18 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two assists led the Cougars to a nonconference win against the Thunder of Vancouver, Wash., in a game played at Summit High. The Cougars (4-3) led 25-22 at halftime, but they held the Cougars to just 10 points after the intermission. Cougars coach Steve Riper said that in the second half his team clamped down on Thunder leading scorer Carly Holboke, who also had 18 points but only four after halftime. The Cougars’ next game is Tuesday at home against Crook County.

ASHLAND — Sarah Edwards led Summit with 23 points, but the Storm fell to Henley in the last day of the Ashland Rotary Tournament. Summit trailed 28-26 at the half, and Henley pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win, according to Summit coach Ryan Cruz. Melissa Trejo scored 10 points for the Storm. Summit (3-4 overall) will host Eagle Point on Tuesday.

SEASIDE — Hannah Wieber led La Pine to a victory with 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and six steals to give the Hawks a 2-1 record at the Seaside Holiday Classic. La Pine led 35-5 at the half and stayed in front the entire game. Holli Glenn scored six points and logged four steals, four rebounds and four assists for the Hawks. La Pine (4-4 overall) will play Tuesday at Lakeview.

CULVER — The Bulldogs were outscored in every quarter in the championship game of the Culver Holiday Tournament. Culver was officially listed as the away team for the contest, which was the squad’s first loss of the season. Cassandra Fulton led the Bulldogs (5-1) with a game-high 17 points, while Sam Donnelly chipped in five. Culver’s next game is a home matchup Tuesday against South Wasco.

CULVER — Ashley James and Brenna Gravitt scored eight points apiece for Gilchrist, who fell to Lost River in the last round of the Culver Holiday Tournament. James also contributed two steals, and Gravitt recorded 10 rebounds. Gilchrist (2-3 overall) trailed Lost River 25-3 at the half. The Grizzlies host the Henley freshman team on Tuesday.

PRINEVILLE — The White Tigers fell to 0-2 in Big Sky League play with the lopsided loss to the Eagles. Desiree Duke led Central Christian with 10 points while, Destiny Wilder added eight points and 13 rebounds. The Tigers (0-2 Big Sky, 3-5 overall) are at Dufur on Tuesday.

Bulldogs go 4-0 in duals
SPRINGFIELD — Culver went undefeated in four duals at Thurston High, including wins against a pair of Class 6A schools. The Class 2A Bulldogs topped host Thurston (60-24), Salem’s McKay High (60-18), Sweet Home (41-36) and Lowell (76-6). Noe Gonzalez (113 pounds), Jared Kasch (126), Jesus Retano (152) and Miguel Gutierrez (160) all went 4-0 for Culver. The five-time defending Class 2A state champions wrestle Orting, Wash., on Wednesday in Washington.
NORDIC SKIING
Storm boys, girls sweep
MOUNT BACHELOR — Summit boys and girls teams each won the first Oregon High School Nordic (OHSNO) races of the season, held at Mt. Bachelor’s Nordic Area. The Storm’s Nick St. Clair finished first in the boys 5,000-meter classic race in 11 minutes, 20 seconds, besting Bend High’s Jacko Widmer by 54 seconds. The Summit boys scored eight points to defeat the runner-up Lava Bears (18 points) and third-place Hood River Valley and Corvallis, which tied with 55 points apiece. The Storm’s Emily Hyde won the girls race in 14:20, topping South Salem’s Vivian Hawkinson (15:18). The Summit girls scored 13 points, holding off Redmond (22 points) and Bend (28).
