Roseburg Sears to shut

ROSEBURG — The only Sears store in Oregon to be closed in the latest round of cuts is in Roseburg, where plans are under way to recruit new retailers.
The Sears store at Roseburg Valley Mall is expected to close by the time its lease expires — at the end of April, the Roseburg News-Review reported. The store has been at the mall since it opened in 1980.
It’s not likely that any one retailer would take over the 65,000-square-foot space, and Roseburg’s economy isn’t expected to attract retailers such as Old Navy or Target, said Melony Hakola, a commercial broker who recruits businesses for the mall.
She said Sears’ gardening and automotive departments provide great services, but the overall business model was outdated.
“The amount of people who go out of town to shop shows the lack of interest,” Hakola said. “You have to be on the new trends to succeed.”
She said an architect is drafting plans, and the likely outcome is dividing the space into three 20,000-square-foot stores, with construction starting as soon as Sears leaves. The company itself hasn’t announced a departure date.
Neil Hummel, the owner of a real estate company in Roseburg, said the closure reflects tough economic times.
He said the biggest obstacle for many malls built in the 1980s is that they may appear outdated, and the Sears closure gives the mall a chance to modernize.
