Leighton C. ‘Bud’ Fairham

Bud was born in Valley City, ND, to Rev. Silas and Rebecca (Clark) Fairham.

They moved to Gresham, OR, in about 1937. Bud attended Gresham high for three years. He was class president the last two years, moved to Salem and graduated from Salem High in 1942. Attended Willamette University for one year and then entered the Navy Air Corp.

Summer of 1943, while waiting for a call into the Air Corp., he worked as a life guard at Breitenbush Hot Springs, where he met his future wife, Betty Bruckman. They were married June 14, 1946, in Salem, OR. They had three sons, Kert, Stephen and Bruce. Stephen preceded him in death. After being discharge from the service, he reentered Willamette University. He was last president of local fraternity, Sigma Tau, and first president of Sigma Chi. He graduated in 1948.

His career with Pendleton Woolen Mills actually started while he was a senior in high school. He held different positions with the company over the years in Portland, Omaha and Detroit, MI. Retiring in 1984. He won several awards as top salesman and had a plaid named after him. A bulletin from Pendleton after his death call him a legend and said he was a mentor to several young, new sale trainees.

He and his wife, Betty moved to Bend in Sept., 1987. They both enjoyed skiing as members of ”over the Hill Gang” and golfing at Bend Golf and Country Club.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Contributions in his name may be made to The Humane Society of Central Oregon, 61170 SE 27th, Bend, OR 97702, where he volunteered for several years.
