Allegiant ends flights to Las Vegas

Allegiant Air will end its twice-weekly nonstop flights between Redmond and Las Vegas, company officials said Friday.
A spokeswoman for Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Co., which operates the leisure-travel airline, announced the development Friday afternoon, about three weeks after the company announced new service from Redmond to Oakland, Calif.
“We’re constantly evaluating our routes, and we’re not seeing the demand for that route we would like to,” said spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler, referring to the Las Vegas flights. “We’re going to use those resources elsewhere in our system where there’s higher demand.”
The airline has no plans to offer service to other destinations from Redmond, she said.
The last flights between Redmond Airport and Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport will depart April 9, according to the company’s online flight schedule.
On some dates, the schedule shows round-trip tickets for the direct flights at $72.58, including taxes.
Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines all provide service between Redmond and Las Vegas, but with stops. A round trip in early April aboard those airlines costs between $258 and $301, according to their online booking services.
Allegiant will contact customers with reservations after April 9 to arrange for a full refund, according to a news release.
“We are always disappointed to stop servicing a route,” Eric Fletcher, Allegiant Travel Co. manager of airports, said in the news release. “We apologize to any travelers who are inconvenienced by this decision.”
Service between Redmond and Las Vegas began in March 2007, according to The Bulletin’s archives. The airline brought in an Elvis impersonator and a showgirl to celebrate the inaugural flight on a 150-seat jet.
The change does not affect Allegiant’s other flights into and out of Redmond, Wheeler said.
Service to Oakland is scheduled to begin in April. Flights between Redmond and the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, which began in 2008, will return in May after what company spokesman Brian Davis called a “seasonal hiatus” in August.
The news about Allegiant cutting Las Vegas flights surprised Roger Lee, executive director of Economic Development for Central Oregon.
Lee heard anecdotally as recently as this week that the Redmond-Las Vegas flights usually are full, he said Friday.
“Certainly from our perspective, we don’t like to see any service leave,” Lee said.
