About 100 bowlers are expected to participate in the Oregon State United States Bowling Congress High School Championship, scheduled to begin today at Lava Lanes in Bend.
The boys and girls open singles championships will be staged today, starting at 3 p.m. Team championship play, which will be contested by 32 teams (16 boys teams and 16 girls teams), is slated to start Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Team play will continue on Sunday at 8 a.m. with six final position games, after which a two-game double-elimination round will determine the top three teams. The second- and third-seeded squads will then face off, after which the winner will take on the No. 1 seed for the state championship.
Team matches will be bowled in the Baker format, commonly used in high school and college tournaments.
Squads qualified at seven district tournaments staged throughout the state. Bend High’s boys and girls teams both advanced to the tournament and are the only Central Oregon representatives. Members of the Lava Bear boys team are Aubrey Garrett, Louis McCoy, Clay Davenport, Jack Klar, Jasper Harris, Ryan Pierce, Max Reisfar and George Fleissner. Bowlers on the Bend High girls team are Lucy Lansing, Brianna Marler, Miranda Baglien, Brittney Osborne, Cassidy Finley, Heather McCoy, Shayla Marler and Rona Campbell. The Lava Bears are coached by Gary Davis.
The championship is open to the public, and admission is free. Doors are scheduled to open at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
