Madras wins offensive battle

MADRAS — Opening their softball season at home against Crook County, the Madras White Buffaloes won a slugfest, 19-14, after scoring 14 runs in the first three innings.
“There was a lot of offense,” Madras coach Shawna McConnell said. “It looks like a (junior varsity) basketball score.”
Cheyenne Parsons went three for four with a double and five runs batted in and Natalie Martin added a double, a triple and three RBIs to pace the White Buffalo offense.
Madras starter Jamie Moe earned the victory, pitching the first three innings of the game and part of the seventh. Moe helped out on offense as well with a two-run home run.
Loran Saenz led the Cowgirls at the plate, ending the day four for five with two doubles and an RBI. Miranda Smith went three for three with two RBIs and Kaylee Johnson contributed a solo home run and two RBIs. Smith, who started in the circle for Crook County, took the loss.
The White Buffaloes host Summit on Saturday. The Cowgirls (0-2) entertain La Pine on Tuesday.

MADRAS — Led by Elicio Garcia and Jordan Gemelas’ win at No. 1 doubles, the White Buffaloes won all four of their doubles matches — two by forfeit — to top the Cowboys in nonconference play. Crook County’s Brady Slater defeated Madras’ Carlos Garcia 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match.

MADRAS — The Cowgirls swept the White Buffaloes in Class 4A nonconference play. Crook County’s Elsa Harris topped Madras’ Nicole Pineros-Suarez 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. The Cowgirls’ doubles team of Katie Brown and Kayla Morgan, the reigning Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state doubles champions, defeated Shani Rehwinkel and Kayla Flowers of Madras 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Crook County (1-0 overall) plays Sisters at Black Butte Ranch on Thursday. Madras (0-1 overall) hosts Mountain View on Tuesday.

Madras, Culver and Crook County open season
PRINEVILLE — Laura Sullivan of Madras took first in the girls high jump, 100-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles at the Crook County Icebreaker. McKenzie Zirbel of Crook County won the 100 and finished second in the 200. On the boys side, Kyle Belanger of Culver won the 400 and placed second in the 800. Isaac Fisher of Madras won the pole vault, while Hunter Bourland of Crook County took first in the 100. Madras is at the Sisters Rotary Invite on April 7. Crook County competes at Summit on Wednesday, and Culver is at Scio on April 5.

Summit posts strong performances at opener
OREGON CITY — The Storm kicked off their season Wednesday with an invitational meet hosted by Oregon City High School. Aloha and Portland Christian also competed. Cole Thomas led the Summit boys in the sprints, with wins in the 100- and 200-meter sprints. William Butler took first in the triple jump and the 110 hurdles, while teammate Michael Wilson won the 300 hurdles and the 400. Jesse Brummett took first in the shot put and discus. On the girls side, freshman Myah Harter won the shot put and discus in her high school debut. Additionally, Alexa Thomas took first in the long jump and 200, while Sarah Edwards captured wins in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Summit hosts a meet Wednesday.
