Kid Culture features fun and educational books and toys for kids.
April is National Poetry Month. Below are two new children’s poetry books written by my favorite poets, Douglas Florian and Jack Prelutsky.
“UnBEElievables: Honeybee Poems and Paintings,” written by Douglas Florian
Florian’s latest poetry book, “UnBEElievables,” is quite the buzz. This picture book is filled with clever rhymes and silly phrases. You can do the “Wiggle Dance” like a bee! You will be impressed by Florian’s beautiful illustrations. His use of solid colors and facial expressions on the bees is charming and vibrant. Laugh at loud at “Bee Anatomy,” “The Worker Bee” and “The Queen Bee” poems.
A fun fact about bees follows each poem, making Florian’s style of poetry and information unique. Make sure to check out the “BEEbliography” in the back of the book for information on keeping bees and honey. Be sure to buzz into a library near you and take it home.
“I’ve Lost My Hippopotamus,” written by Jack Prelutsky, illustrated by Jackie Urbanovic
“I’ve Lost My Hippopotamus” by Prelutsky, the first Children’s Poet Laureate, contains more than 100 new poems. This magical, fabulous book is filled with a variety of poem styles from concrete to wordplay.
For example, “The Spellican” combines the words “spell” and “pelican” into one crazy word. From the “Screaming Weemies” to “On the Road to Undiscovered,” Prelutsky’s extraordinary collection is filled with humor and silliness. Some might even seem odd and absurd, such as “The Fabulous Skating Potato.” Prelutsky has once again brought us an amazing collection of poems for the whole family to enjoy.
