This April, the world’s largest insects are popping up in the city of Portland.
No need for concern or calls to the exterminator. These insects are the lead characters in Cirque du Soleil’s current touring production, “OVO.”
Known for its unique blend of artistry, acrobatics and live music, the renowned Canadian organization will raise its trademark yellow and blue tents April 5 to May 13 at the Portland Expo Center.
Meaning “egg” in Portuguese, “OVO” is Cirque du Soleil’s 25th live production. It debuted in Montreal in 2009 during the company’s 25th anniversary season.
Inspired by the microscopic world of insects, the show features an exotic cast of creatures including a ladybug looking for love, a mysterious fly known as The Foreigner, and Master Flipo, the leader of the insect community. Costumes were designed by Liz Vandal.
Running two and a half hours (with a 30-minute intermission), “OVO” features a cast of 55 performing artists from 14 countries. The variety of acrobatic acts include foot juggling, hand balancing, slackwire and a Spanish web duo (an aerial act using a rope).
The flying trapeze act, featuring six performers soaring 40 feet in the air, is one of the highlights of the show and “the biggest act of its kind to ever be presented under a big top by Cirque du Soleil,” according to a news release. The act combines many circus disciplines including “banquine, Russian swing and swinging chair.”
Another major component of the show — the live music — is performed by an eight-piece band. Written by Berna Ceppas, the music “combines the sounds of bossa nova and samba with funk and electro music,” the release says. Ceppas also samples actual insect sounds.
Ticket prices range from $43.50 to $143.50 for adults, $33 to $104.50 for children (ages 2 to 12) and $40 to $130.50 for seniors (ages 65 and older) and students (ages 13 and older with ID). To purchase tickets and for more information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com or call 866-624-7783.
