No ‘hard news’ in Redmond Spokesman

The Bulletin finally drove a stake through the heart of The Redmond Spokesman as a newspaper. Redmond’s local paper is no longer a newspaper. This is a self admission by the editor and the publisher. It states so on the front page of the Nov. 14 edition. They will no longer report “hard news.” We, of course, know The Spokesman is owned by the same folks as The Bulletin. With The Bulletin suffering hard times, they have decided to destroy the news-making ability of The Spokesman.

The Bulletin declared bankruptcy earlier this year. The editor continues to try to justify the changes they are making to the paper. They raised subscription prices and reduced content and call it “better value.” People have already complained about the TV section being diminished. On Nov. 18, the editor announced further changes. It all seems to me to be a decrease in service to the reader. Now The Redmond Spokesman has been reduced to a “social” commentary and its top reporter, who loyally served the paper more than 30 years, was laid off.

What a sad day for Redmond! What next, Central Oregon?
