BEAVERTON — A dazzling varsity debut by freshman Sarah Heinly and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by Raja Char helped Summit complete a stunning girls basketball comeback Friday afternoon.

The Storm trailed by as many as 17 points late in the third quarter but rallied to claim a 52-48 victory over Class 6A Reynolds in the opening round of the Aloha Tip-Off Tournament.

The season-opening win at Aloha High School advanced 5A Summit to the championship game of the four-team tourney, set for today at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of the Aloha-Forest Grove semifinal.

Heinly, a 5-foot-6 guard, made seven three-pointers on 14 attempts for a game-high 21 points. Char sank seven of eight free throws in the final two minutes, as the Storm outscored the Raiders 24-6 in the fourth period.

Summit was down 42-25 until Melissa Trejo hit a three-point hoop just before the third-quarter buzzer to give the Storm hope. Heinly, who made at least one three-pointer in each quarter, made two in the fourth period to help fuel the comeback.

“She had a pretty special night,” said Summit coach Ryan Cruz of Heinly. “She made shots that kept us in the game.”

Char finished with 10 points and Trejo finished with nine, as did Shannon Patterson, who was singled out by Cruz for her overall play.

“She (Patterson) gave us a lot of hustle on the defensive end, getting loose balls and rebounds,” said Cruz.
