FBI Agents in Oregon are searching for a woman whom a suspected serial killer said he raped near Maupin between 1996 and 1998.
Israel Keyes, held in Anchorage for the murder of a barista there, committed suicide last weekend while awaiting trial.
Keyes had confessed to raping and strangling Samantha Koenig, 18, in Anchorage and hiding her body under ice on frozen Matanuska Lake, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
Keyes, 34, committed suicide in jail this past weekend as he awaited trial for Koenig’s death last February in Anchorage.
According to the FBI, Keyes told agents in Alaska that he raped but did not kill his first victim in Oregon sometime between 1996 and 1998. He said the girl was 14-18 years old and the sexual assault occurred on the Deschutes River near Maupin, according to an FBI news release.
According to the agency, Keyes said he “discreetly” separated the girl from a group of friends and raped her. “To date, authorities have not been able to find any relevant police reports that would fit this scenario, and it is possible that the victim never reported it. If Keyes was being accurate about the time period and the girl’s age, she would now be in her late 20’s to early 30’s. She may have lived in the area or simply been visiting the area on vacation,” the FBI stated.
Keyes reportedly confessed to murdering several people, including four in Washington, according to the FBI.
Anyone who has information about the rape case is asked to call the FBI in Portland at (503) 224-4181, in Bend at 541-389-1202 or the national hotline at 1-800-CALL FBI.
