Basketball

Oregon State women beat Oregon — Ali Gibson and Jamie Weisner had 14 points apiece and Oregon State used a 16-3 second-half run Sunday to pull away from Oregon for a 68-49 win in Corvallis. Sam Siegner added 10 points for Oregon State (9-9, 3-3 Pac-12), which beat its rival for the second time in six days. Liz Brenner and Danielle Love had nine points apiece for Oregon (2-16, 0-6), which has lost eight consecutive games. Brenner had seven rebounds. Oregon State led by three at halftime (29-26) and opened the second half with a 7-2 run to go ahead 36-28. The Beavers later got consecutive 3-pointers by Weisner and Alyssa Martin to go up 44-34.

No. 2 Indiana gets past Northwestern — Cody Zeller had 21 points and 13 rebounds to help No. 2 Indiana beat Northwestern 67-59 Sunday in Evanston, Ill. Jordan Hulls added 15 points. Christian Watford scored 14, and the Hoosiers (16-2, 4-1 Big Ten) hung on after things got tense down the stretch. They led by 17 in the first half and were up 31-17 at intermission, but Northwestern (11-8, 2-4) rattled them with its trap in the second. The Wildcats got within five three times, but the Hoosiers prevailed.

No. 14 N.C. State holds off Clemson — Freshman T.J. Warren scored 21 points while Richard Howell scored the go-ahead basket with 1:56 left to help No. 14 North Carolina State hold off Clemson 66-62 on Sunday night in Raleigh, N.C. Howell finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolfpack (15-3, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who never trailed yet still found itself in a tight game against a league opponent that wouldn’t go away.

Suns pick Hunter as interim coach — The Phoenix Suns picked player development director Lindsey Hunter as interim coach, two days after the team parted ways with Alvin Gentry. Hunter played for 17 seasons in the NBA. He joined the Suns in the scouting department last year and this season took over the team’s new player development department. The Suns have lost 13 of 15, including four straight at home, and at 13-28 have the worst record in the Western Conference. They don’t play again until Wednesday, when they face the Kings in Sacramento.

Football

Te’o to be interviewed by Couric — Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o will be interviewed by Katie Couric, the first on-camera interview given by the All-American since news broke about the dead girlfriend hoax. Te’o and his parents will appear on Couric’s syndicated talk show Thursday. ABC News announced the interview Sunday, but gave no details as to when it will take place and where. Te’o gave an off-camera interview with ESPN on Friday night. He insists he was the victim of the hoax, not a participant.

Baseball

Former Miami coach dies — Ron Fraser, the coach who was called “the wizard of college baseball” and turned Miami into one of the game’s powerhouse programs, has died. University officials said Frazer was 79. Fraser’s family spokesman, Tony Segreto, says he died Sunday morning. Fraser had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for many years. Fraser led Miami to the 1982 and 1985 national titles and took the Hurricanes to the College World Series 12 times. He spent 30 years at the school, retiring in 1992 with 1,271 wins.

Winter sports

German wins men’s World Cup slalom — Felix Neureuther of Germany finally beat Marcel Hirscher to win a World Cup slalom Sunday in Wengen, Switzerland. Neureuther made up a 0.05-second deficit after the first leg to win by 0.21 over the Austrian overall World Cup leader, who was seeking his fourth straight slalom win. Ivica Kostelic of Croatia was third, 0.25 behind Neureuther’s two-run time of 1 minute, 50.53 seconds.
