Central Oregonian competes in World Cup — Bend cross-country skier Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess took 52nd place of 72 skiers in a FIS World Cup men’s classic sprint race staged on Saturday in Davos, Switzerland. Kazakhstan’s Alexey Poltoranin won the race, followed by Switzerland’s Dario Cologna and Italy’s Federica Pellegrino. Fourth-place finisher Andrew Newell was the top American, while Blackhorse-von Jess, winner of the men’s free sprint at the U.S. national championships in January, was the third of four participants from the United States. Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk prevailed in the women’s classic sprint.

Beavers topple Gonzaga — Oregon State sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run fourth inning Saturday to overcome an early 2-0 deficit en route to a 9-2 win over Gonzaga in the Palm Springs (Calif.) Tournament. The Beavers, now 2-0 in the tournament and on the season, play UC Riverside today at 1 p.m. at Palm Springs Stadium. In Saturday’s game, OSU failed to get a runner on base in the first three innings against touted Gonzaga left-hander Marco Gonzales. But the Beavers got rolling in the fourth against Gonzales, a rally that included RBI singles by Michael Conforto and Gabe Clark, a sacrifice fly by Danny Hayes and a two-run double by Jerad Casper.

Ducks win opener in Hawaii — Jake Reed and Christian Jones combined for a five-hit shutout, leading Oregon to a 3-0 victory over Hawaii on Friday night in the Ducks’ 2013 season opener before a crowd of 4,726 at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu. Reed allowed four hits and struck out seven over six innings before giving way to Jones, who allowed one hit and struck out two to get the save. Aaron Payne, Brett Thomas and J.J. Altobelli each drove in a run for Oregon in the first game of the four-game series.

Harvick gets NASCAR win — Kevin Harvick won the exhibition Sprint Unlimited race by dominating the final two segments of Saturday night’s Speedweeks opener in Daytona Beach, Fla. It was Harvick’s third win in the last five years in the non-points race at Daytona International Speedway. He held off challenges from Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle on the final lap to win in his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

Courtney Force earns top qualifying spot — Courtney Force raced to her first No. 1 qualifying position of the season Saturday at the NHRA Winternationals at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Calif. Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) also will lead their categories into today’s eliminations at the NHRA Drag Racing Series season opener.
