Alice Takeyo Sugano

April 26, 1931 – March 14, 2013

Alice Takeyo Sugano died on March 14, 2013. She was born April 26, 1931, in Kaneohe, Hawaii to Makita and Kiya Takebayashi and went to grade school with the famous Hawaiian singer Don Ho…married her pen pal Albert Toshiro Sugano on May 27, 1954…raised three children in Southern California until 1973, when they moved their family to Redmond, Oregon.

Alice was best known in Central Oregon for her work in the fabrics department at Payless Drugstore, and even when the store changed hands to Rite Aid, she was kept on staff despite getting rid of her department. She eventually retired at around 73 years old.

Her favorite things in life were chickens, sewing, hot air balloons, her dog Sachi, Don Ho, and Ichiro Suzuki before he changed from the Seattle Mariners to New York Yankees.

She is survived by her brothers, Fred and Joe Takebayashi; and her sister, Grace Lee; her children, Sharon Sugano Cratty and her husband, Rick, Dale Mitchell Sugano and his wife, Cheryl, and Gene Allen Sugano an his wife, Silver. She has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at the Redmond Memorial Chapel, on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., a memorial service will follow at Community Presbyterian Church in Redmond at 11:00 a.m.
