Killer’s attempted name change — A judge in Portland has rejected a double murderer’s request to change his name, questioning his contention that he wants to switch for purely religious reasons. The Oregonian reports that a lawyer representing Mark Beebout told Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Diana Stuart on Friday that his client had long been a Muslim. Lawyer Jonah Paisner said the proposed name — Yunus Mohammed — reflects Beebout’s deep connection to the faith. Earlier this month, the registered sex offender was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Conviction in stabbing death — A man who’d hitchhiked from the Bay Area in California to the Oregon coast in search of work has been convicted of stabbing another man to death in a North Bend motel last summer. KCBY-TV reports the murder verdict against Ronald Wayne Ambill was returned Friday after a week of trial.

Improper body disposal charge — An Oregon woman has been charged with disposing of a body improperly after the body of her 89-year-old mother was found behind a Michigan thrift store. The St. Clair County sheriff’s department said Thursday that Kelly Rhodes, of Salem, is jailed in Illinois, where she was arrested on a warrant charging her with the misdemeanor.
