Summer trails

Deschutes River and Phil’s trails, including the trail to Benham Falls and Black Rock Trail, are in good shape. On-leash requirements start today for all users with dogs. Bikers need to be cautious on trails and are urged to yield to other users.

Tumalo Falls road access opened last week. Users will still encounter increasing snow farther up the trails. The Mrazek Trail to the north of Tumalo Falls is scheduled for heavy equipment work near Road 4601 starting next week.

South Twin, North Twin and Fall Creek lakes are snow-free.

Peter Skene Ogden Trail is still blocked by snow near the Paulina Creek Falls area. Road 21 into the Newberry Caldera area is scheduled to open May 10. There is limited recreation site access due to various snow levels.

Horse Butte Trail, Swamp Wells campground and trail and the Peterson Ridge area are in good shape with dusty, sandy conditions. Prescribed burning season is in effect with various plumes in the area. Trailhead information boards will have updated information when appropriate.

The Metolius River area will have increased use with good conditions. Be aware of ticks in the area. Black Butte Trail is accessible with about half of the trail snow-free. Pole Creek area road closures are still in effect with hazard tree clean-up. Access to various trails will open in the coming weeks.

The Suttle Lake area is in good condition with a small number of down trees. The road around Crescent Lake is open, but Crescent Ranger District has limited access. The Metolius-Windigo Trail is snow-free.

Most wilderness trails above 4,600 feet have approximately 1 to 10 feet of blocking snow. Users are urged to avoid until there are drier conditions.

Cascade Lakes Highway is open near Lava Lakes, but closed north to Dutchman Flat Sno-park due to plowing operations. Complete opening is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend. McKenzie Pass Highway is still closed to vehicles due to plowing operations. Bikers and hikers should be cautious of operations.

Winter trails

All sno-parks and trail grooming are done for the season except at Dutchman Flat, which has good spring conditions. Boundary lines in the sno-park will be modified later in the week due to plowing.
