La Pine girls golf earns state berth

POWELL BUTTE — Sammie McPherson followed up her 86 on Monday with an 82 on Tuesday to lead La Pine to the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 5 girls golf championship at Brasada Canyons Golf Club and a spot in next week’s state tournament at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond.
McPherson ended the two-day tourney in second place overall with a 168. McKenzie High’s Sydney King was the event’s medalist, shooting a 6-over-par 78 on Tuesday after concluding the first day of the district tournament in a three-way tie for first with McPherson and Trinity Lutheran’s Victoria Sample, who finished third with an 86-87—173. Crook County’s Caitlin Dalton placed fourth overall with a 97-95—192 and Ridgeview’s Tianna Brown took fifth with a 101-92—193.

The top two teams and top five individuals from the district meet earned spots at state.
With McPherson leading the way, the Hawks shot a tournament-best 788. Taylor Tavares added a 100-94—194, Bridget McDonald contributed a 101-102—203 and Kara Cope carded a 114-109—223 for La Pine.
The Cowgirls took second with an 840, securing the second and final team berth to the 4A/3A/2A/1A state championship, which will be held next Monday and Tuesday on Eagle Crest’s Ridge Course. In addition to Dalton’s 192, Chelsea Shank posted a 196 (102-94), Cora White recorded a 224 (114-110) and Sierra Smith turned in a 228 (112-116).
Ridgeview placed third overall with an 889 and Sisters was fifth with a 942. The Outlaws’ Holly Chapman produced the shot of the day, hitting a hole-in-one on No. 12.
