EUGENE — Eying a top-four team finish and a state trophy, the Culver girls kicked off the first day of the Class 2A state track and field championships with an individual state title.

Senior Cassie Fulton, who helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2A volleyball championship last fall, set a PR on the last javelin throw of her high school career, winning the event Thursday at Hayward Field with a toss of 124 feet, 9 inches. Fulton was in fourth place with a mark of 113-02 going into her final throw before unleashing her 124-9, which topped runner-up Kassie Linville of East Linn Christian (119-11) and third-place finisher Taylor Smith of Grant Union (119-10).

No other Culver girl scored points Thursday, but Lori Sandy advanced to today’s finals in the 100-meter dash, as did Hannah Lewis in the 400. The Bulldogs are tied for seventh place with Oakland (10 points) heading into today.

Corey Sledge led the Culver boys Thursday, tying for fifth in the pole vault by clearing 11-0. Kyle Belanger ran the fastest preliminary 400 time of the day (51.35 seconds) and earned a spot in today’s final.

At the 1A championships, Gilchrist’s Zane Anderson recorded a 46-111⁄4 toss in the shot put to become the Grizzlies’ first individual boys champ in five years. A heavy favorite coming in, Anderson bested runner-up Gage Corrigan of Mohawk (44-101⁄4) by more than two feet.

“He didn’t PR, but he threw just far enough to win today,” Gilchrist coach James Anding said. “And that’s fine.”

Brenden Wolf, a freshman, added a sixth-place finish for the Grizzly boys in the high jump, clearing 5-6. Gilchrist ended the opening day of the state meet in sixth place with 11 points.

Anding’s girls team did not have a state champion, but three athletes combined for 20 points Thursday, putting Gilchrist in second place after the first day of events. Paige Kooker finished second in the discus, Ashley James was fifth in the javelin and sixth in the discus, and Sierra Shuey placed fourth in the long jump.

The Class 3A, 2A and 1A state track and field championships conclude today.
