The pilot of the crashed aircraft Sunday near Prineville airport was identified by Prineville Police Department as Murray Allen Crowe, 47, of Terrebonne.

Crowe was pronounced dead at the scene after crashing an experimental Challenger II aircraft around 11:30 a.m., according to reports in The Bulletin. He was the only occupant of the aircraft.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Crowe received a student pilot license on June 27.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board have taken control of the investigation into the cause of the crash, said Prineville Police Department Capt. Michael Boyd. Witnesses of the crash told Boyd they saw the plane shaking violently before crashing into the ground.

The Challenger II, a light sport aircraft, is usually built by hobbyists from a kit and can cruise at 85 mph, according to the manufacturer’s website.
